A good read ……..

I love a good book; and, as some of you know, actually prefer to read ‘real’ books rather than ‘e’ books.  This can make packing for my holiday a bit of a challenge but I have recognised that when I read a ‘real’ book, the content seems to go in better.  So, for me, the challenge of packing books is worth the enjoyment I get from them.  I am not going away for a few weeks yet,  but was thinking the other day about what books I might want to take with me.  Do I need something challenging to keep my brain working, or some novel that allows me to be transported to a different place? How about some poetry or maybe a book on a subject I don’t know much about and might give me a whole new perspective on a subject? Do I read one book at a time or have two or three on the go at once that I can dip into as the mood takes me?  So many choices and options – but what is the right one?

There are a lot of questions in that last paragraph.  It almost feels like the amount of questions stifles any decision making.  So, I was reflecting on how that might apply in a business environment.  Are people too embroiled in trying to answer lots of questions that their creativity and actions can be stifled?  I know that has certainly happened to me, and also to some of my coaching clients.  If I come across that sort of scenario, I encourage clients to take a step back, reorganise their thoughts and then decide on the right action for them to take.  So, I thought I had better follow my own advice. Taking a step back I knew I wanted to take some books with me; I then thought about any that I have had waiting around to find the ‘right moment’ to start them; this seemed to lead to a natural list of which ones are important at this moment in time and – hey presto! – I could easily identify which ones I want to take with me. So, if you feel there are too many questions around something you want to progress, just try and take a step back and see if the answer comes to you. And if you are going on holiday, then hope you enjoy some down time to do whatever refreshes you……
